Regarded as "enfant de terrible" in the South African art world, Beezy Bailey has opened his individual exhibition to celebrate works he has created in the last 30 years. The exhibition is being held in Wuhan from Oct 29 to Nov 30.
At the opening ceremony of the exhibition, Bailey said that his paintings expressed his aspirations of freedom and his ideals. He also expressed his religious faith and political views through sculptures. The exhibition is called "Along the Path to Beauty".
There are about 80 pieces of artwork displayed as part of the exhibition. Ronnie Kasrils, the former director of Information Ministry of South Africa, and Phillip Dexter, the country's congressman, attended the opening ceremony accompanied by over three hundred specialists and scholars.
Beezy submitted one artwork for a triennial exhibition under the pseudonym Joyce Ntobe, a black female, in 1991. The artwork received an honor at the National Gallery in South Africa and became part of its permanent collection, before word got out that 'Joyce Ntobe’ was in fact Beezy.
However, Beezy`s request to hold his retrospective exhibition at the South Africa National Gallery was turned down. Fortunately, with the support of Chen Dabing, the founder of the Chenshia Museum, Beezy agreed to hold his "Along the Path to Beauty" exhibition in Wuhan, China.
