This year, June 14 marks China’s ninth Cultural Heritage Day. To better promote the cultural heritage day and its values, Datong is holding open days of its more than 60 ancient tombs and archaeological sites on June 14 and 15.

Carrying the theme of “Revive the Cultural Relics”, the event is aimed at displaying recent archaeological findings and achievements and inspiring the general public, in particular students, to pay attention to and protect the cultural relics. This event is organized by Datong’s Cultural Relics Bureau, the Archaeological Institute of Datong and the Cultural Relics Inspection team.

Among the tomb sites open to the public, 28 belonged to the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-557) established by the Xianbei group. The Archaeological Institute of Datong began its excavations there in April.

These tombs are located east of Weidu Avenue and north of Yunbo Road. Residents and tourists can take Bus 11, 28, and 64, get off at Yunboli station and walk to the middle of Yunboli Street. The tombs are close to the surface, shaped as brick-chambered tombs and soil cave tombs. Based on the existing situation, the administration will soon conduct archaeological excavations under the relevant regulations.
