Study of Buddhism

Updated : 2014-10-17

Buddhism study is the most important part of Buddhist life. Buddhists literally mean "the public" in Chinese and are divided into two categories: lay Buddhists, and monks and nuns. There must be at least four people to make up a Sangha (meaning "assembly" or "company"). Monks following the 10 commandments of Buddhism and the complete precepts are called acolytes or bhikkhu. Nuns following the 10 commandments of Buddhism and the complete precepts are called samaneri and bhikkhuni.

Accepting tonsure, wearing black clothes and following commandment rules are prerequisites of becoming a Buddhist. Buddhists following complete precepts have to live a secluded and abstinent life and refrain from killing, stealing, committing obscenities, lying, drinking, wearing flamboyant decorations, singing, dancing, cursing, conducting trade, fortunetelling, bullying and other activities.

Buddhists cannot pray on behalf of others nor can they grant blessings or exoneration on behalf of powers from the holy world. Buddhists are not a bridge between civilians and gods. Turning to Buddhism is a way of personal liberation. Buddhists should focus on studying doctrines and theories of Buddhist scriptures, and the learning methods of various factions. For those Buddhists living on Mount Wutai, they carefully adhere to doctrines every day. Studying Buddhism and serving the religion is their way of showing respect and protecting the temples.
