The Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (Toutunhe District), or UETD in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, moved a step closer to become a National Demonstration Eco-industrial Park, as it passed the provincial pre-assessment on May 18.
Experts from the Research Center for Eco-Environment Science of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Economic and Information Commission of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, and Xinjiang University of Finance and Economics checked relevant documents, and also visited the local park, project site and companies, to better know UETD’s efforts on ecological reconstruction, resource recycling and low-carbon buildings.
The experts spoke highly of the zone’s achievements in environment management, ecological reconstruction, energy conservation and consumption reduction. Besides, the experts suggested UETD continue its leading role in ecological promotion and set a new benchmark for eco-industrial park development among areas along the Silk Road Economic Belt.
Lyu Zixiang, leader of the expert team, noted that UETD should keep on with its efforts on the follow-up work to prepare for the final assessment.
Ding Tongzu, vice director of the zone, said that passing the pre-assessment had boosted their confidence and they will move forward on the way to become the first National Eco-Industrial Demonstration Park in Xinjiang and northwestern areas, boosting UETD’s transformation, improving infrastructures for environmental protection.
In 2013, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Ministry of Science and Technology approved UETD to build the National Eco-Industrial Demonstration Park, the first of its kind in Xinjiang. In the past four years, ecological development has become a highlight of the zone’s economic growth.
