Chief stresses scientific development concept in Olympic preparations

Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) on Thursday urged BOCOG staff to make down-to-earth preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games while carrying out the concept of scientific development.
With the event only 575 days away, the preparatory work in 2007 is very crucial, he told a BOCOG meeting to study President Hu Jintao's remarks during his visit to the construction sites of major venues for the Games on October 1 last year.
Liu said the concept of scientific development should go through the process of Olympic preparations, and that integration and coordination should be enhanced to deal with the relations between the areas such as venue management and operation, the resources at home and abroad, construction of Olympic projects and environmental protection facilities, use of funds and materials for the construction of Olympic projects, and the Olympic preparations and urban development, with an aim to benefit the great majority of the people and sustainable development.
Liu, who is also member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and secretary of Beijing Municipal CPC Committee, urged earnest efforts to deliver a good job in the year of the "decisive battle" for the Games, including the construction of venues and the creation and improvement of venue operation systems.
BOCOG need to successfully stage the 26 test events for 2006 to examine the operational conditions of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, he said. Besides, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, Olympic Torch Relay, large-scale cultural activities such as the Olympic Cultural Festival, media services, citizens' civility level, and staff management are all focal points of BOCOG's undertakings for 2006, he noted.
Present at the meeting were also Chen Zhili, state councilor and BOCOG first vice-president, Liu Peng, minister of State General Administration of Sport and BOCOG executive president, and Wang Qishan, Beijing mayor and BOCOG executive president
