US arms package for Taiwan condemned

On Friday, the US announced a $6.4-billion arms package for Taiwan. This has harmed Sino-US relations, and reflects the Cold War mentality and moral hypocrisy of the US, says an article on Taihai Net. Excerpts:

Despite the Chinese mainland's opposition, the US government has decided to sell arms worth $6.4 billion to Taiwan. A US spokesperson even said the arms sale would contribute to maintaining security and stability across the Straits.

This blatant interference in the country's domestic affairs has angered the Chinese people. The word "Cold War" became a historical term almost 20 years ago, but the US still suffers from Cold War mentality.

Almost 30 years ago, amid the Cold War, the US congress passed the so-called Taiwan Relations Act despite the improvement in cross-Straits ties. The US government has played a similar game now, when cross-Straits relations have warmed up. This shows it is still trying to contain China because of its different political and social system.

The unwarranted US move has, no doubt, cast a shadow on bilateral relations.

A comparison of America's words with deeds, brings out a greater irony. The US has said repeatedly that it respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. But it has violated both with the arms' sale. No word describes America's claim to justice in international society better than moral hypocrisy.

The government has already taken measures like postponing negotiations with the US to express its anger. The US should give up its Cold War mentality and stop harming bilateral relations to ensure peace and security can across the world.
