Should Golden Week be scrapped?

( bbs.chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2014-09-28 07:45

Editor's note: With the week-long National Day holiday around the corner, hundreds of millions of tourists are expected to flood into popular scenic areas across the country, resulting in various problems, such as overcrowding and traffic congestion. Should China rethink its holiday arrangements to help alleviate the holiday crunch? What do you think about China's holiday system? You're welcome to voice your opinion.

Having an office and staff in China the way public holidays are taken confuses me.

I realize that these elongated breaks make it easier for people to travel during their breaks but for those of us conducting business on an international level have problems. Working at the weekends is not good as our customers are not working and then the long breaks make it more difficult for overseas customers to contact us.

Maybe the system could be reformed with extra holidays being given to staff at a time they can choose, this would not only aid efficiency as it would spread the times that people wished to travel taking some pressure off the public transport system.

In the UK the longest fixed holiday for most workers is two days for Christmas. I would not want any workers to miss out on well-deserved breaks, but do you think it is time for a rethink?
