Motor Racing-Patrick switching to Andretti IndyCar team

NEW YORK, July 25?- Motor sports' best known female driver Danica Patrick ended speculation of joining the NASCAR circuit by opting to race for Andretti Green Racing starting next year, the Andretti team announced on Tuesday.

Patrick, IndyCar series Rookie of the Year in 2005, had contemplated jumping to the popular NASCAR circuit but instead settled to change teams after her contract with Rahal Letterman runs out this season.

"I'm proud to be joining Andretti Green Racing next year," Patrick, 24, said. "I felt like it was time for a change and this is what's best for my future."

Andretti Green Racing has won the IndyCar series driver and team championships the past two years.

Patrick, currently ninth in IndyCar standings, said last week she was probably going to remain in open wheel racing.

"My heart and soul is in IndyCar racing," she said. "NASCAR is not out for good. It's out for right now."

In 26 starts, Patrick has four top-five finishes and 13 top 10s. She burst into the spotlight last year when she finished fourth in the Indianapolis 500 and became the first woman to lead a lap.

"Today is an exciting day for everyone at Andretti Green Racing," team co-owner Michael Andretti said in a statement. "Danica has shown great talent during her first two seasons in the IndyCar Series.

"Our focus has been and always will be on winning races and winning championships. We certainly believe Danica will do that.

"She has made it very clear that one of her goals as a driver is to win the Indianapolis 500 and we are looking forward to giving her a great opportunity to do that."
