Ease up or risk premature end, Malaysia's No.1 told

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's injury-prone shuttler Wong Mew Choo must ease off the accelerator or risk a premature end to her career, the country's badminton chief said on Tuesday.

Kenny Goh, general manager of the Badminton Association of Malaysia, fears the world number 10 will burn out before her time if she continues to play and train as hard as her more robust national team mates.

The 25-year-old, Malaysia's top-ranked woman singles player, has struggled with long-term knee, heel and elbow injuries.

"Mew Choo has a few good years more in the game if she can recover fully from the injuries," Goh told Malaysia's Star newspaper.

"But in her current condition, she should make a careful selection of the tournaments to compete in instead of going for one after another. This way, she will have time to give more attention to nursing the injuries.

"But she is now following what the others go through in training too. Probably, instead of going for weight training five times a week, Mew Choo can do it three times a week."

Goh said the national body was determined to salvage Mew Choo's career and would speak to Malaysia's national singles coach about changes to her training schedule.
