After three hours of driving from Lanzhou, the capital city of Gansu province in northwest China, we arrived at Tan Town in Lintao county -- the seat of Yungu Primary School, China’s 200th Hope School established by Procter & Gamble, the world’s largest consumer goods company.

P&G officials announced last Saturday that it would donate 500,000 yuan to rebuild Yungu Primary School, which was established in 1928. The school rests 2,400 meters above sea level and is surrounded by beautiful terraces. The school is in poor condition and seven classrooms were declared in dangerous situation.

Christopher Hassall, P&G’s global external relations officer, said he expects the new school to be completed by September, 2011.

Employees from P&G also built an Expo pavilion with students to outline the colorful world of hometown in the mountains, expressing a bright future for the pupils.

So far, P&G has established 200 Hope Schools in China, providing educational opportunities to more than 100,000 Chinese children in 1,000 villages across the country. The US company has donated 60 million yuan to establish Hope Schools in China since 1996.
