TEHRAN - Twelve suspects involved in Tuesday's attack on the British Embassy in Tehran have been handed over to the country's judicial authorities, Iran's police chief said Saturday.

Brigadier General Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moghaddam told reporters police have taken actions to protect the British Embassy and British Council compounds in the capital city. He also denied the attack was orchestrated.

On Friday evening, witnesses saw security had been tightened around the British Embassy in Tehran, with the compound reinforced with wire mesh and police officers deployed nearby.

The attack took place one day after Iran's highest legislative body unanimously approved degrading diplomatic ties with Britain in response to London's "hostile" policy against the Middle East country.

On Tuesday, Iranian protesters stormed the compounds of the British Embassy and the British Council, calling for expelling the British ambassador.

In response, British Foreign Secretary William Hague ordered immediate closure of the Iranian Embassy in London Wednesday, and asked all Iranian diplomats to leave Britain within 48 hours.

Iran later said it regretted the incident, which it described as "unacceptable behavior by a small number of protesters."
