Thailand donates $164,000 for quake victims in Japan

BANGKOK - Thailand on Saturday donated five million baht ($164,000) and other disaster relief necessities as an initial assistance to victims of massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the Foreign Ministry said.

The Thai government was prepared to dispatch a search team and other necessities to Japan, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said in a statement.

Kasit said the cabinet could consider more assistance at its meeting on Monday.

He said there were 42,686 Thai people in Japan about 19,000 of whom were workers and 2,400 were students.

Of the number of Thai people, 21,276 were reported to live in areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami, and so far 10,965 of them have been found to be safe by the Thai embassy in Tokyo. ?

Kasit said so far he received no report that any Thai has been injured or killed by the disaster.
