The role of China is of fundamental importance … because a number of Western democracies, the UK, the US, are enduring a period of great disruption and introversion, and so if the Chinese leadership is able to look outwards and act with responsibility for the wider world … that will be of huge significance … we need cool heads and wise minds to make sure that we get through this phase of global history.
