Indonesian painter calls lacquer fan painting 'fantastic'
The exploration team of the "Canal Chic: Reviving China's Heritage" creative planning project (Jiangsu) went sightseeing in the Dongguan Street in Yangzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, on Friday evening.
During the sightseeing, the team member Dr HC MAS Hedi Suryatna, an Indonesian painter, experienced the art of lacquer fan painting in a small shop. "The technique of lacquer fan painting is very unique, and the overall experience is fantastic," Hedi said.
Lacquer fan painting is a trending cultural creative product regarded as an innovative expression of lacquer craft — an intangible cultural heritage of China.
Instead of using tools, lacquer fan painting is done by using water and lacquer. The process is very simple — just drip the desired colored lacquer into the water, stir it, immerse the fan in the mixture for a while, and then take it out.
The process is like opening a blind box because no one knows in advance how the finished product will eventually turn out. So every fan is unique.
