A Chinese defense spokesman on Thursday criticized Japan, warning that "neo-militarism" in the country is increasingly becoming a potential "source of turmoil" in East Asia.

Jiang Bin, a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks at a regular news conference in Beijing in response to recent security-related comments and actions by Japan and the United States.

According to media reports, the US and Japan recently conducted joint military drills on Japan's southwestern Nansei Islands, about 110 kilometers from Taiwan island, and established a joint command center. Japan's defense minister reportedly said the move was aimed at strengthening regional deterrence and emergency operational capabilities.

China has consistently maintained that military cooperation between relevant countries should not target any third party, harm the interests of third parties, or undermine regional peace and stability, Jiang said.

He warned that Japan's right-wing forces have been taking increasingly risky and provocative steps in the military and security field.

"Neo-militarism is increasingly showing signs of becoming a potential source of turmoil in East Asia," Jiang said.

"All peace-loving people should not allow Japan to go further down the wrong path, undermine peace and bring disaster to the world," he added.
